Dr. Wrenn is Vice-Chairman of the Department and is also the Residency Director. Dr. Wrenn's original training was in Internal Medicine at Emory University. After spending a number of years in private practice, he returned to academics. Dr. Wrenn is board certified in Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine. He has many research interests including alcohol-related emergencies, metabolic acidosis, asthma, rhabdomyolysis, ethics and ischemic heart disease. Dr. Wrenn has published more than 100 journal articles and editorials in such journals as the Annals of Emergency Medicine, Academic Emergency Medicine, New England Journal of Medicine, Annals of Internal Medicine, Lancet and the American Journal of Medicine. At Vanderbilt Dr. Wrenn serves on the Ethics Committee, the Graduate Medical Education Committee and the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.

Dr. Wrenn was the recipient of the 1994 and 2001 Shovel Awards, a prestigious award given by medical students each year to the best clinical professor. He also received the 1996 national EMRA Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the 2002 Parker J. Palmer “Courage to Teach Award”. Dr. Wrenn is a snappy dresser and is married to Melissa and has four children. He enjoys reading, gardening, movies, and running. Actually, he doesn’t enjoy running, but does it to forestall his ultimate demise.
