Stephen John Cico grew up in the rural countryside on the Ohio-Indiana border. He attended college in Dayton, Ohio, at Wright State University where he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a 4.0 GPA with a University Honors B.S. in Biological Sciences. While there he did four years of research on the sizing and activation of neuronal nucleosomes during early mouse developmental stages. After obtaining his M.D. degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, he did a dual residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at the Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago, IL.

He then completed a fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Medicine at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh where he was actively involved in teaching students and residents, as well as being the first “in-training” member of the hospital’s Institutional Review Board. Dr. Cico is board-certified in Internal Medicine, General Pediatrics and Pediatric Emergency Medicine.

Dr. Cico has an interest in learning and teaching, and is currently pursuing his Master's in Education with a specific focus on Medical Education through the University of Cincinnati College of Education, Criminal Justice and Human Services in conjunction with the Division of General and Community Pediatrics through the College of Medicine. His educational philosophy and focus is on adult learning styles. He's intersted in experiential and constructivist learning opportunities, particularly simulations, available in teaching medical students, residents and fellows, as well as optimizing the educational experience attained during their rotations. Dr. Cico serves on the Admissions Screening Committee for the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, is involved in reviewing child abuse cases in the Pedatric ED, and gives monthly lectures and participates in the testing of medical students during their Emergency Medicine clerkship rotation.

Dr. Cico enjoys traveling, music, theater, biking, and tennis. He is an amateur oenophile, and enjoys cooking and baking. When he's not at work, he's spending time with his 3 cats and two dogs, a West Highland White Terrier "Newton” and Scottish Terrier “Bernie."
