Anesthesia

Objectives:

  1. To gain motor skills in the act of endotracheal intubation (Medical knowledge and practice-based learning and improvement).
  2. To understand and be able to use bag-valve-mask equipment and various laryngoscopes (Patient care and practice-based learning and improvement).
  3. To understand and use airway techniques for the difficult airways (Bougie, LMA, bronchoscopy). (Practice-based learning and system-based practice).
  4. To gain knowledge about the pharmacology of rapid-sequence intubation (e.g. etomidate, succinylcholine, vecuronium, pancuronium, versed) (Medical knowledge and patient care).
  5. To understand the potential complications of these drugs and endotracheal intubation (Patient care and medical knowledge).
  6. To understand the difference between adult and pediatric airways and airway techniques (Patient care and medical knowledge).
  7. To understand preoperative assessments (Patient care, medical knowledge and communication skills).
  8. To learn about the environment of the OR and potential possibilities in airway management (System-based practice).

Description of Clinical Experience

  • For three weeks, each resident will perform endotracheal intubations and preoperative assessments in the outpatient surgery department under the auspices of anesthesiology residents, faculty physicians, and certified registered nurse anesthetists. For one week, each resident will be assigned to pediatric anesthesiology where he/she will be instructed in pediatric airway techniques.

Description of Didactic Experiences

  • Every Monday and Friday morning there is an Anesthesiology conference.

Evaluation Process

  • Each resident receives written evaluations from faculty members in the Anesthesiology Departments as well as direct bedside feedback.

Feedback Mechanism

  • Direct bedside feedback as well as written formatted rotation evaluations.

This rotation has been agreed to and approved by the Chairman of the Department of Anesthesia. Residents are given copies of all rotation summaries at the beginning of their PGY-1 year. Residents should use rotation summaries, formatted written rotation evaluations, their ability to intubate and manage airways, and their performance on the In-service Examination to assess the rotation’s effectiveness.
