Emergency Medicine residents spend 25-30% of their ED shifts in the Vanderbilt Pediatric Emergency Department, a stand-alone Level 1 pediatric trauma center.
First year residents have a dedicated month on the pediatric inpatient ward service. Second year residents rotate in the pediatric intensive care unit. All residents care for pediatric patients during rotations on anesthesia, ortho, trauma and toxicology.
Residents work several Peds ED shifts during each of their ED months throughout their three years of residency. Pediatric patients are seen 24 hours per day, 7 days a week in the Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital Emergency Department. The Pediatric ED has 37 patient care rooms and is staffed by Pediatric EM and EM attendings, Pediatric and Emergency Medicine residents, nursing staff and Child Life Specialists. At least two faculty members staff the Pediatric ED 24 hours a day to maximize teaching and learning opportunities. Residents work side by side with Pediatric Emergency Medicine Faculty in a collegial environment. Approximately 45,000 Pediatric patients are seen annually of which 10% are admitted.
The Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine has had a Fellowship training program in Pediatric Emergency Medicine since 2001. There are a total of 6 PEM fellows, two in each year of training.
