Shifts for residents in the ED are spent working with faculty who are engaged and interested in teaching. To that end, we have at least double attending coverage at all times.

A first year resident typically works 18-20 twelve hour shifts divided between the adult and pediatric emergency departments.

A second and third year resident works 18-20 shifts. About 70% of these shifts will be 8 hour shifts in the adult ED. The remaining 30% will typically be 9 and 12 hour pediatric ED shifts.

Our goal is for the residents to become more efficient and see larger numbers of patients, assuming greater teaching responsibilities for students and lower level residents as they mature.

You will work with residents from all the major academic Departments at Vanderbilt, including Internal Medicine, Surgery, Ob-Gyn, Anesthesia, and Psychiatry. We feel this fosters learning and collegiality among services.
