Dr. Smith did his undergraduate training at Union University in Jackson, TN, where he met his incredible wife Joy. He went to the University of Tennessee in Memphis for medical school training, and there became a connoisseur of fine sweet teas. He then completed the Internal Medicine-Pediatrics combined residency followed by an Emergency Medicine residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. His clinical and research interests center on improving patient care, especially the care of trauma patients, by using simple bedside decision rules.

He divides his time evenly between the adult and pediatric emergency departments and enjoys the variety this offers. He has written several articles and abstracts and has lectured locally for the Tennessee College of Emergency Physicians, for the EM, combined Med-Peds, and Pediatric residencies, and internationally in Quito, Ecuador. Currently he is serving on the Faculty Advisory Council for the School of Medicine. Outside the hospital he enjoys spending time with his wife and six children and taking them boating, water skiing, and backpacking. He also enjoys reading about the Reformation, reading the Puritans, and being actively involved with his church.
